VirCanto Biography

Five classically trained soloists and the pianist Max Hanft founded the group VirCanto in 2014. The years of collaboration with the Bavarian Radio Choir formed the foundation of the group’s artistic vision. VirCanto’s performances present a synthesis between the highest standard of ensemble singing and the interpretation of challenging art songs with uncompromising solo vocal technique. The choral pieces in the program are generally performed with one voice per vocal line as was standard practice in the time of Franz Schubert. The goal is to create a homogeneous ensemble sound with each singer still displaying his individual vocal qualities. This gives VirCanto its unique full-bodied sound as well as its dynamic flexibility. The selection of solo works solidifies the underlying theme of the program as well as giving each of the artists an opportunity to present his individual talents.
